CHARACTERISATION

Nagyunn

  • (to Najin) “You the knight, with me the adventurer, running into one another out there in the world.” (#2)
  • “Nagyunn felt guilty because of this [Luzian’s father] and this guilt was not feeling guilty over having killed him, but guilt over not being able to save him.” (#13)
  • Expression reading
  • Dynamic sight
  • Zius: “This guy’s… only saying the right things. Ugh, he gives me a headache. He was trying to help in the first place. But he’s changed the focus to the blind spot of the system instead… damn it…” (#25)
  • “Let’s all be stronger the next time we meet..” Have I grown attached to them?” (#31)
  • Zius is the only person he can’t figure out. (#35)
  • Zius: “I can’t tell if he lacks emotion or ego… maybe that’s why he can see things objectively.” (#35)
  • Zius: “It’s been tough babysitting that rude little bastard, hasn’t it? We’ve come to get what’s rightfully ours.” (#41)
  • “I was merely using them so I could get my revenge.” (#44)
  • Nagyunn outsmarting the narin into working for him (#50)
  • Apologised to solidify his position as someone who gives commands (#52)
  • “My fight has always been possible because I trusted and relied on all of you. You aren’t weak at all.” (#54)
  • “I know how to become the strongest spear.” (#59) (#68) (#73)
  • “Was Luce right…? Could I have killed him? I said I’d get my revenge… so what am I hesitating for? What… am I afraid of? Najin… what in the world… I need to pull myself together. Regardless, they killed Najin. That alone is an unquestionable “fact.” There’s no reason to hesitate. I have to pay them back. That’s all I need to think about. Because that’s… all I have left.” (#67)
  • Gave up on a lead for the Dragon’s Descendants to rescue his fellow apprentices (#73)
  • Naryun: “Where is he?” / Waron: “Oh, the skull has spoken. So you know how to talk. Who do you mean?” / “The insolent and vile rogue.” / “There’s more than one… the spiky-haired one or the one wearing a hat?” / “…” “First, the one wearing a hat.” / “Oh, that one! Yes, he’s a vile rogue. A very vile one at that. I agree.” (#84)
  • Nagyunn thinking he may not be able to trust Zius because in the end, he ultimately relies on his power. (#88)
  • Nagyunn quitting being an Apprentice Knight (#91)
  • “No, don’t give up Nagyunn! Najin would’ve been able to handle it.” (#92)

  • Nagyunn squabbling with Yong via mind reading (#98)
  • Zius: “Najin misunderstands the knights. Knights aren’t weapons that can simply be used to achieve an objective. They’re people. There’s no way they’d move however he wants them to.” (#100)
  • “For Najin, me, and everyone…this revenge is the only way.” (#100)
  • “He was at woodion, the village of fire. He is the one the first mother of dragons mentioned? The one whom the dragon’s power cannot reach. The one whose will cannot be read. The one who can escape. He is called… the child of the fire. He is the ember that will set the dragon ablaze.” (#108) (#116)
  • Zius: “So, you’re asking why I still have high expectations for you when I know how ridiculously weak you are? It’s exactly because you are weak. The knights are too strong. They try to overcome any situation that comes their way solely using their power. They’ve managed to get by because they’re strong, but there’s definitely a limit to this. You’re weak. And you’re very well aware of that. That’s why you don’t try to resolve something by strength alone. You always study the circumstances and observe your surroundings. And you come up with countless and varied solutions. In other words, Najin, you are as limitless as you are weak.” (#115)
  • Zius: “It seems that arrogant one you’ve got there… is one of ours.” (#121)
  • Nagyunn reveals his identity to General Haejin (#122)

  • The Dragon’s Descendants gave Najin a special power, but killed him when he didn’t keep his part of the deal. (#119)

Luce

  • Weapon name is Gemini (#11)
  • Nagyunn: “That brute, Luce, liked beating me up just for the fun of it. Everyone knew what he was like, so that’s why the group was able to accept that he had done something terrible again.” (#13)
  • Luce taunts Nagyunn and Nagyunn’s mask slips (#67)
  • “He humiliated me back then. I’ll expose him in front of everyone! Even if the guys from Woodion were brainwashed, I doubt the others will believe him!” (#67)
  • “Wait… do I need to be scared? It’s just Nagyunn. I’ll toy around with him to my heart’s content, and then I’ll kill him!” (#68)
  • Luce’s motives (#117)
  • Luce was there on the day of the fire (#117)
  • Luce is eaten by the Dokkaebi (#120)

Lauzun

  • Weapon name is Libra (#11)

  • Flashback where Lauzun was saved by Najin and Nagyunn (#27)
  • “I guess you [Tyr] don’t know Lauzun much. Lauzun’s much more simple and blunt than you think.” (#27)
  • Nagyunn: “After being bossed around by us to our heart’s content, he eventually struck out on his own, deciding to stay in Woodion.” (#28)

  • Straightforward thinking (#11)
  • Weapon name is Lightning (#11)
  • Nagyunn: “As for Luzian… she hated me with a fiery rage. She was annoying, sure, but she didn’t seem like that bad of a person. I actually understand her more now. She needed someone to take out her anger on.” (#13)
  • the only casualty in the fire 10 years ago was Luzian’s father (#13)
  • When facing a village raided by enemies potentially stronger than knights, chose to find Rosewood Fox Ludika for assistance in saving the villagers, but more indecisively than Lauzun. Later on changed her mind and came back to assist Tyr and Najin. (#15)
  • Fadiyan: “Luzian, I’m worried about you. You’re not weak of course. But in power, speed, wits, etc. … you’re not better than anyone else. Always hone your own strengths.” (#22)
  • “Tell me! Why did you start the fire!” (#22)
  • Tyr didn’t expect Luzian to stand getting insulted after her match but she simply laughed (#22)
  • Luzian angry at herself because she is too weak and can’t support the others in the battle (#38)
  • “I’m sure he had a reason! Najin wouldn’t have betrayed us otherwise! Although… I don’t know what the reason is!”  (#39)
  • Keen hearing (#98)

Tyr

  • Nagyunn: “Tyr… never did anything to me for some reason. He never hurt me, and would just stand silently on the sidelines and watch.” (#13)
  • When facing a village raided by enemies potentially stronger than knights, chose to fight the enemies regardless of their strength and his own skill level (#15)
  • “We must help those who need our help. That’s the way of the knight. I would rather walk the way of the knight despite not becoming a knight myself than to become one by turning my back on the way.” (#15)
  • “During times when Nagyunn was bullied… Tyr… was always at the spot. But he never stepped in… and would just watch. That’s because.. he thought that was the way it should be. It wasn’t that he saw violence as reasonable, but it was a decision based on considering the victim’s situation. But… he also believed they couldn’t make rational decisions as they were victims. So… Tyr thought to himself. I must always watch them… so they won’t cross the line. Tyr was a person with some sort of justice.” (#26)
  • Gave up in his battle against Marsha (#26)
  • “No, that wasn’t trust. That was shifting responsibility.” (#90)
  • Has suspicions about Najin/Nagyunn (#98)
  • Sister is Tanshirin, but he rejects her as his sister (#113). Probably because she joined the Malto in Gilgamesh lol
  • “That guy is full of revulsion.” / “For his sister who was a cult member?” / “That’s probably what he thinks. But he’s mistaken. It’s actually a self-loathing. He just isn’t aware of it. That’s why he mistakenly thinks he detests his sister.” (#113)

White Doe Fadiyan

  • “Knowledge is mightier than power.” (#1)
  • Zius knew Fadiyan and Ludika 5 years ago (#64)
  • “Question. When two beautiful women stand against four evil forces, who will win?” (#89)
  • Fadiyan and Ludika are some rare knights whose powers become squared when they unite. (#89)
  • “She had already retired from her post as a knight.” (#90)
  • Ludika: “Fadi… you came. Will you be alright…?” / Fadiyan: “Of course! But Ludi, should you be the one asking if I’m okay right now? With the state you’re in and all.” / Ludika: “Hmph…” / Fadiyan: “Don’t cry like a baby because your tears will block your vision!” / Ludika: “That won’t happen!” (#90)
  • About Fadiyan’s narin, gyeousari (#91)
  • Fadiyan: “Did you cry because you missed me?” / Ludika: “No! What do you take me for?!” / Fadiyan: “What do you think? A crybaby, of course!?” / Tyr, thirdwheeling: “sigh” (#91)
  • Fadiyan head-locks Zius lol (#110)
  • Fadiyan pinches Zius’ cheeks (#119)

Rosewood Fox Ludika

  • Fadiyan: “She’s a lot stronger than me too.” (#6)
  • “There are those whose fighting ability increases when enraged. […] She unmistakably belonged to the former group.” (#7)
  • “Najin [this is actually Nagyunn].. I don’t like you one bit. Your behaviour is far from honourable. I can’t ignore the sense that you used your comrades.” (#19)
  • “I don’t want to take part in Waron’s sick games.” (#22)
  • Ludika praising Najin (#42)
  • Zius knew Fadiyan and Ludika 5 years ago (#64)
  • Zius: “Fox is going to give us an earful…” after Nagyunn passes out from his battle with Luce (#68)
  • [Ludika tearing up] / Laurun: “That’s a bad habit. It’s not good for your eye health. It’s greed, really.” / Ludika: “Shut up. I won’t lose sight of a single moment.” (#87)
  • Fadiyan and Ludika are some rare knights whose powers become squared when they unite. (#89)

Periwinkle Wild Dog Fidorance

  • “Yep yep, that’s me. So you recognise me. So embarrassing ^^” (#19)
  • Fidorance vs Lyamin (#29)
  • Fidorance vs Hanbok sans (#36)
  • Luzian: “He immediately told us to run. He was hurt. We should have fought side by side with him! I’m sorry. It’s my fault for being so weak!” / Zius: “How is that your fault? If you’d fought together with him, it’s likely that he would’ve ended up dead. You weren’t weak. The opponent was just too strong. Learn from it and strengthen your resolve. Instead of worrying, focus on becoming stronger.” (#39)
  • Zius: “Why didn’t you use the caton?” / Fidorance: “I’m no good with that kind of stuff.” / Zius: “Sigh. I clearly explained it to you last time—” / Fidorance: “But it looks like some…” (#39)
  • “It’s not fair that they didn’t let me join just ‘cause I’m hurt.” (#41)
  • When Najin said he suspected Fidorance of being the spy: “What makes you think it’s me? Explain yourself. If you don’t have a good reason… then I can’t help but suspect you too.” (#44)
  • “Alright, alright, I got it. I’ll give you my weapon and let you put me under custody. That should do it, right? It’s frustrating that I have to sit this one out too, but I’ll trust that you all will rescue them.” (#44)
  • Observant enough to ask Nagyunn “Do you even really want to become a knight?” (#44)
  • Nagyunn was told Fidorance and Darang are physically the strongest amongst the knights. (#44)
  • Nagyunn: “Yes, I was told you and racoon are physically the strongest.” / Fidorance: “Why didn’t you go to racoon?” / Nagyunn: “Just because…” / Fidorance: “Even after you suspected me of being a spy, huh?” / Nagyunn: “…” / Fidorance: “You don’t need to be sorry. Being careful isn’t a bad thing. You are sorry, aren’t you?” / Nagyunn: “…” (#44)
  • “If I can’t wield it, that means most knights can’t either.” (#44)
  • Najin suspected Wild Dog because of his personality — “There was a high chance he’d keep a close watch on Nagyunn for putting him in the list of suspects.” (#45)
  • Darigon: “Therefore, those who aim to become knights must be willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of honour. No matter the situation.” / Fidorance: “No matter the situation?” / Darigon: “Yes.” / Fidorance: “Are you sure?” / “Yes!” / “Is that your belief? Or are you saying that simply because it’s conventional wisdom? Do you truly believe and feel that way deep within your heart? And have you really decided to act upon that belief? Do you undoubtedly believe that it’s the right thing to do… or merely think that it is?” (#47)
  • Waron and Fidorance clash (#56)
  • Fidorance: “You’re out of your mind too. You want me to risk my life for something like that?” / Zius: Are you going to die?” / Fidorance: “Of course not.” (#59)
  • Zius: “Fidorance. As I’ve told you before, you tend to overprotect them. I know you don’t want them to get hurt, but… that might not be good for them either. Pain accompanies growth. Conversely, pain promotes growth. It’s not an option. It’s a necessary process. Overprotection only delays it. Then, they may find it unbearable when they experience the slightest pain.” // Fidorance: “Qilin was right. It’s all my fault…!” (#73)
  • Fidorance: “Duck!” / Waron: “Are you dense? If you shout that out, of course that skull will evade it too.” / “You’re right. I should’ve cut you both down.” / “That’s a little…”  (#82)
  • Fidorance and Waron vs Hanbok Sans (#83)
  • Fidorance (thought): “Sorry for suspecting you, Pitch Black Hen.” / Waron (thought): “The skull is too dangerous to handle by myself. I need a shield.” (#84)
  • Waron, to Fidorance: “Think about the kids! Are you gonna let them meet that thing?!” (#85)
  • Fidorance’s critical injuries (#91)
  • He’s alive! and angy (#112)

  • Zius: “I’m going to be taking Najin with me.” / Fidorance: “What a surprise. I thought you didn’t like types like him.” / Zius: “I don’t. But there’s something I want to confirm.” (#31)
  • Najin is the only apprentice he can’t read
  • Noted by Nagyunn to be one of the two knights who are especially keen. Qilin Zius has sound judgement (#31)
  • Nuljin: “Why is [Waron] in charge of guiding apprentices?” / Zius: “Well, I guess I could say it’s because of me.” (#34)
  • “Much weaker than her [Waron]” (#34)
  • Around Yulnia’s fighting level normally (#34)
  • Nagyunn: “He’s already generally expressionless, and on top of that, even when he speaks, I can’t gauge whether he’s speaking the truth or not. Maybe because he’s always hiding many things.” (#35)
  • He’s a qualified knight, become weak after pledging his geas. “However, I’ve obtained a special power in return.” (#36)
  • Zius reading Nagyunn’s plan (#42)
  • Nagyunn: “Yeah right. He’s continuously sounding me out. That means he’s suspicious of me too. However, he’s also the most trustworthy out of everyone. He’s that smart. That’s why… it’ll be hard for me to use him.” (#47)
  • Ludika: “What’s with the surprise task? I thought you didn’t like that type of thing. And this one could be dangerous too.” (#48)
  • “It is because I know my limits very well that I can exceed them.” (#49)
  • Messed up his safety assessment of the surprise task he gave the special second class due to Kandentia rocking up (#50)
  • When he’s calling people to subdue them, he uses their real name (#44) (#51)
  • Kandentia: “Puhaha! There’s something you don’t know either? You always acted like such a know-it-all!” / Daljan: “What a surprise.” (#52)
  • Nagyunn: “I’m not suspicious of you. I just don’t completely trust you.” / Zius: “I’m relieved that I’ve been ruled out from your list of suspects. But it’s a shame. The one I trust the most is you.” / “It’s because you say things like that that I don’t trust you.” (#53)
  • Tells Nagyunn his secret power (#53)
  • Pulled out 4 years worth of Event Horizon (#60)

  • Zius knew Fadiyan and Ludika 5 years ago (#64)
  • Conducted investigations on his geas with Laurun and Legia 5 years ago (#64)
  • Daljan: “Are you still afraid of fighting?” / Zius: “It’s not that I’m afraid, it’s that I don’t want to.” / “It doesn’t look much different in others’ eyes. A Qualified Knight who dislikes fighting? You are aware that this is contradictory?” / “I know. But I’, sure you’re aware… that the best is if one can win without fighting.” / “…” / “I can do it with this power.” (#65)
  • Zius met Waron 3 months after he battled Fadiyan. (#65)
  • Zius made a deal with Waron re: his Event Horizon power. Waron wants to see his power and has a secret reason, Zius is using Waron as a shield (#66) (#69)
  • Waron: “You know, you tend to do things without thinking of the consequences. Is it okay for a knight to act like that?” / Zius: “I don’t really want to hear that from you…” (#68)
  • Waron: “Anyway, so who is he? Na… gyunn? Is it?” / Zius: “…” “He’s just… Najin.” / […] / Waron: “Personally, I like him. Na… jin…” (#68)
  • This is his first time going to the Eastern Continent (#76)
  • “What was most important back then… was saving your lives.” (#80)
  • “Is there anything he could do…? Even if he was a threat to us, he hasn’t done anything yet. So, we can’t hurt him first, because that is honour and the way of the knight. How difficult…” (#82)

  • Waron: “I was mistaken. I thought I definitely had the upper hand now. But I was wrong. That guy… is more awful than I initially thought.” (#125)
  • Waron: “Qilin… I hate knights. But I’ve come to realise that… among all knights… you’re the one I dislike the most, Cerulean Qilin.” / Zius: “Thanks for the compliment.” / Waron: “You think that was a compliment?” (#125) parallel to Waron’s words to Tink before tinky winky dieded
  • Solvas: “Ugh, seriously! Why does he act like someone who only lives for today?!” / Fadiyan: “On the contrary… Qilin always lives for tomorrow. The problem is… he doesn’t include himself in that tomorrow.” (#126)
  • Waron: “I hate knights. They use honour as a pretext to cloak violence in the guise of justice. I’m not suggesting that violence can’t equate to justice. I just find it disgusting that they use their knighthood as a shield to evade critical thinking. In that aspect… he was an atypical knight. To Cerulean Qilin Zius… honour is not an absolute standard but something that can be set aside for more important values. He’s an unusual guy. And not at all like a Knight. But that’s why he’s the most knight-like of all. From what I’ve seen, his top priority is the future. What a weird guy. That’s why I don’t loathe him. But he just won’t behave the way I’d like him to.” (#126)
  • Has to turn his hands to activate his power (#126)

  • Zius: “There’s a high chance that Black Hen will riot. You have to stop her when she does.” / Fidorance: “Me? / “I’m not telling you to kill her. You don’t need to win either. Just restrain her.” / “Isn’t it better to use her power? In the first place, it’d be a waste of two knights.” / “One-dimensionally… it’s a waste. A huge one. But from a multifaceted view, it’s not. It’s not time to use Black Hen yet… And just having experienced knight-level battles will be a huge help to the apprentices come time for the real thing.” (#59)
  • Zius met Waron approximately 5 years ago (#65)

  • Zius using his power as bait for Waron to protect him (#124)
  • “It goes without saying that Pitch Black Hen Waron… possesses exceptional combat skills. Moreover, Waron is remarkably versatile in handling a wide range of situations… In other words, a paragon knight. Pitch Black Hen Waron is simultaneously the most untrustworthy knight… yet the most dependable.” (#125)

  • Nagyunn was told Fidorance and Darang are physically the strongest amongst the knights. (#44)
  • Nagyunn: “And based on what I’ve learned of racoon during during our time together, she’s a completely unreliable person. Spy or not, I don’t even know whether I can trust and obey her. She makes the trainees do all the odd jobs and doesn’t even stand night watch. Does she… even have a thought inside that head of hers?! Is it alright for us to follow her?!” (#56)
  • Nagyunn: “Can we trust racoon?” / Zius: “Why do you ask?” / “Well… she’s a little…” / “Why? Because she seems stupid? Because she seems weird? Or is it because she seems thoughtless?” / “No, well…” That’s harsh. / “Well, whatever it may be, I do understand where you’re coming from… but racoon is a trustworthy knight. She just seems careless because she relies on instinct, however… that can be an asset at times.” (#58)

The other special second class apprentices

  • Nuljin was pretending to be weaker for Yulnia’s sake (#37)
  • “They spit out too easily that they’ll risk their lives.” (#47)

  • Pymel can see far (#112)
  • Tamin: “We don’t know how long they’ll stay there. Rabbit is essential for his knight-level combat power and sense of direction. We also need Marsha, who can use her fins for precise detection… and Pymel, who has good eyesight and can corroborate. But if I leave, it’ll be hard for you to adapt dynamically to unexpected situations.” (#112)

  • Lyamin reveals she was the spy (#43)
  • Lyamin appeared in Letoon two years ago (#45)
  • “The reason we killed Najin is that Najin betrayed us.” (#64)
  • Kallan: “What have you done to us? Well, you’re future knights. We hate people like you. Just consider it bad luck!” (#72)
  • [in response to Darang] Lyamin: “Do you have the right to say that? You slaughterer. Why did you kill our clan? How did it feel to slice through them? What were their screams like? And what about the smell of burning? Was there even a reason?” (#80)
  • Lyamin is significantly stronger than several Apprentice Knights (#87)
  • Laurun asks to collaborate with Nagyunn / Laurun being a rat (#103)

Generals

  • About Naryun: “He’s arrogant. Even his attire shows that he has no intention of hiding himself. He must consider others to be beneath him. I guess he’s that confident in his abilities. It’s true that he’s strong though.” (#39)
  • Naryun feels slighted lol (#40)
  • Naryun’s berserk button is people calling his highness the King (#40)
  • Dragon martial arts slaying dragon (#40)
  • Naryun Got his wrist snapped off and his Narin stolen by Nagyunn (#42)
  • Naryun: “Do you truly wish for me to die, your majesty?” (#86)
  • Naryun Dead (#86)
  • Haejin has an eagle that can deliver messages (#96)

Other Knights

  • Kandentia, Daljan and Zius are familiar with each other. Kandentia doesn’t seem familiar with Fidorance (#52)
  • Tamin carrying first special team’s teamwork on his back (#91)
  • Solvas: “[Nagyunn’s] the type who thinks that it’ll all work out if he bears all the burdens and makes the sacrifices! Betrayal my foot! We need to pick a day to round everybody like that up and teach ‘em a lesson!” (#99)
  • Tamin calls Tanshirin Cat-nim (#108), calls Hasen Rabbit-nim (#112), Darang Racoon-nim (#115)
  • Solvas: “Think it over carefully! We’re humans. Who knows when we’ll die? There’s no going back once it’s too late.” (#113)
  • Tanshirin and Solvas gossiping about Fadiyan and Zius LMAOOO (#119)
  • Crimson Hippo Hinsher’s ability — the penetrating eye (#128)

Dragons

  • Yong (“Dragon” in canon but the name is confusing so I’ll go with the Korean transliteration. Dragon-nim (용님)) first appearance (#79)
  • Yong: “Because I was fooled by a wily one… due to this individual, I can only consume food others give me, and neither sleep nor leave this place as I please.” (#89)
  • About Yong’s power: “It seems to be a method of designating coordinates! I think they can be dodged if we predict them!” (#92)
  • Yong can somewhat read people’s thoughts (#95)
  • Yong: “To be precise, I’m not reading your mind. You could say I can hear the sounds that leak out. So please refrain from having such intense thoughts about me. It’s giving me a headache.” (#98)
  • “Warp drive… is the ability to fold space to the coordinates that one’s line of sight can reach to travel to said coordinates in an instant.” Yong can use it 3 times (#104)
  • Yong can’t lie (#108)
  • “The Dokkaebi… can amplify a specific function of the mind of an individual who satisfies certain conditions. Because the Dokkaebi isn’t creating emotions where they don’t exist… it’s hard for the individual to realise what’s going on. And even if they do… they merely stop trusting their judgement. Disbelieving oneself limits one’s actions and thoughts. This hesitation generally leads to self-destruction.” (#109)
  • “The Dokkaebi is currently the most influential being in the east… and a dragon that sold out his own kind.” (#119)
  • “Why did the Dokkaebi sell out his own kind? He had an objective. And that objective was… eating his own kind.” (#119)
  • Dokkaebi can’t read minds (#120)
  • the necessary condition for Dokkaebi’s ability to be initiated is “Hostility” (#121)
  • Yong: “It’s been so long since I haven’t been betrayed… I’m glad I trusted you. Nagyunn… thank you for being loyal. For that… I shall stand by you.” (#121)
  • Dokkaebi’s chomping ability(?) is used for the second time “already” (#121)
  • Yong’s real name is Kamelsia (#124)
  • Dokkaebi is the Prime Minister of the Eastern Continent, a higher thank than Generals (#99) (#129)

WORLDBUILDING

Order Knights (also called Qualified or Combat Knights)

  • “They will forfeit their life without a moment’s hesitation for the sake of justice, and view an honourable death as a privilege.” (#1)
  • Ludika: “Being qualified and actually being a knight are two different things. You either try to become worthy of the title, or are given the title because you’re worthy.” (#8)
  • Knighting accolades (#11)
  • Ludika: “Facing an opponent you could not defeat… the worst situation possible… you did not succumb. You kept your head held high, and chose to act in a righteous way. That is the true virtue at the basis of knighthood, and the most important skill you can harness.” (#18)
  • Zius: “One cannot become a knight with strength alone. Without the ability to persuade, even the strongest knight cannot lead. A knight must have their own sense of justice that is persuasive.” (#20)
  • Zius: “To be able to do something on your own, unswayed by outside forces. That is justice.” (#20)
  • “Being powerful is different from being strong. To be powerful means you can kill the opponent in front of you. To be strong means you do not kill your opponent even though you can. A knight must be someone who is strong, not powerful. It’s a famous saying. Take it to heart” (#31) — a quote from Tink of Gilgamesh fame heeh
  • Colour theory: the deeper the colour, the stronger you are — implied by Zius to just be confirmation bias, not real (#34)
  • Gatekeepers are those who were close to becoming knights but ultimately failed; predecessors of Knights’ Apprentices. (#48) (#50) About as strong as Marsha (#52)
  • Celestial Sphere (The Knights’ Administration Office) (#52)
  • “About 500 years ago…. there existed the strongest and worst knight in history. […] His name was neither recorded nor continued.” Demon Knight (#61) — expanded upon in Gilgamesh, the Blood Red Spider
  • 5 years ago they had a contract with Legia and the Dragon’s Descendants (#65)
  • Most Knights don’t wear armour. “It’s because knights are fundamentally evasive. Attacks that can be avoided can be avoided, and if the attack is unavoidable, most armour would be meaningless. Unless you’re a knight specialised in defence, in most cases, it’s better to reduce your weight and avoid the attacks.” Nagyunn thinks this is ridiculous btw LMAO. this is also the same for Generals and the Dragon’s Descendants (#69)
  • “Many years ago, a general crossed over to the central continent… under the pretext of taking back runaway nationals. And then there was a clash with our knights. The general is said to have fallen in battle. Not long after, the knight who killed the general also died. The problem starts here.” / Zius: “The eastern continent demanded the corpse of the knight. Obviously, they knew very well that we wouldn’t easily give our knight up. They just needed an excuse to invade, and probably hoped we wouldn’t. And of course, as they wished… we did not hand over our knight. The situation was reaching a breaking point, and war was imminent. First Special Class was dispatched to grasp the situation and collect intelligence.” (#76)
  • “The knights are vastly different from the general population. That’s why they are knights. In other words… they’re unpredictable.” (#109)
  • Some guy: “A hero shines brightest during turbulent times.” / Daljan: “It’s turbulent times that force a hero to emerge.” (#112)
  • Court people idk: “Just what about them is honourable?” “It’s not like they’re mindless beasts. Oh, they are beasts, aren’t they?” “Just look at how they’re using brute force again to—” (#128)

Apprentice Knights

  • Apprentices get a stipend (#2)
  • “Those who pass are promoted from knight-in-training to apprentice. Once you’re a knight’s apprentice, you’re no longer a civilian.” (#5)
  • After selection to become a Knight’s apprentice, there is training (#8)
  • MC group is in the 274th class / the second special class. “While you in the second special class are being taught, you will also perform duties as members of the knights’ platoon.” (#8)
  • Everyone’s expression (read by Nagyunn) after he called them good-for-nothing apprentices: (#23)
    • Yulnia: wariness
    • Nuljin: worry
    • Quaring: fear
    • Darigon, Wadrin: anxiety
    • Toorisun: Panic
    • Marsha: excitement
    • Myusa: confusion
    • Jiroon: tension
    • Lyamin: chaos
    • Pymel: puzzlement
    • Darang: Surprise
    • Fidorance: Impress
    • Waron: Interest
    • Ludika: Anger
  • “Each squad will be comprised of four people — a knight who is the leader, and three apprentices. Training will take place simultaneously with the missions, and the members of the squad will be reorganised for each new mission.” (#30)
  • 1st mission: (#30)
    • Zius: Najin, Yulnia, Nuljin
    • Fidorance: Luzian, Myusa, Lyamin
    • Ludika: Lauzun, Darigon, Toorisun
    • Darang: Tyr, Wadrin, Pymel
    • Waron: Jiroon, Quaring, Marsha
  • Nagyunn’s list of possible suspects for spies aside from Lyamin:  (#43)
    • Pymel
    • Black Hen
    • Lauzun
    • Fidorance
  • “Eat as much as you want, and then it’ll be maintenance time. You’ll repair your equipment or purchase new weapons. As for weapons, let me add that the Siring is a decent entry-level piece, and Gnojes can make custom orders…” (#52)
  • Appointment ceremony for second special class will take place informally, led by Kandentia (#53)
  • 2nd mission: (#53)
    • Advance Unit | Racoon’s group: Wadrin, Najin, Marsha
    • Monitor Unit | Fox’s group: Tyr,
    • Training Unit | Wild Dog & Hen’s group: Myusa, Lauzun, Yulnia, Nuljin, Toorisun, Quaring, Jiroon, Darigon
    • ?? Unit | Qilin’s group: Luzian, Pymel
  • The Knights find out Najin is actually Nagyunn, and give him a task to prove himself suitable to continue being a Knight’s Apprentice (#67)
  • 1st special class all survived (4 members) (#68) (#74) sent to do recon on the war situation with the East Continent (#76)
  • Ludika returns to report on the information obtained, then forms a punitive expedition with Ludika leading the pursuit. Everyone else will move to the base and start special training under (Waron?) Fidorance and Zius’ command. After special training, there will be selection on who will go to the east continent to rescue the first special class. (#69)
  • 3rd mission: (#70)
    • Dispatch Mission | Wild Dog’s group: Nuljin, Lauzun
    • Search Mission | Wild Dog’s group: Quaring, Darigon
    • Supplemental Training | Wild Dog’s group: Yulnia, Toorisun, Myusa, Jiroon
    • Dispatch Mission | Qilin’s group: Marsha, Pymel, Najin
    • Search Mission | Qilin’s group: Tyr, Wadrin, Luzian, [Toorisun (#74)]
  • 1st Special Class Knights all personally applied to join the mission. Tamin was recommended by Hasen (#85)
  • Nargyunn sends a notice saying he’s betrayed the Apprentice Knights. “From this moment on, Najin is considered the enemy.” (#94)
  • Waron: “Did y’all know that you’re a material of sorts to enhance the strength of the knights? For example, like a mother who overcomes strong predators to protect her young.” (#96)

Geas

  • “The biggest difference between the qualified knight and the independent knight is about geas.” (#36)
  • “All qualified knights are required to pledge an oath to the emperor. The oath varies vastly for each knight. Only the emperor and the knight know the exact details of the oath. To the qualified knight, who lives by honour and dies by honour, an oath weighs heavier than their own lives. Even if they die, they would never break their oath.” (#36)
  • Oaths exist for control. “They become sure methods to control the qualified knights. And the knights accept these weaknesses. The geas which bind the knights symbolise the chains in the chains that bind the sword.” (#36)
  • You may occasionally obtain a special power in return for pledging your geas. (#36)
  • “But at last, the demon knight met his end at the hands of the hero, Crimson Hippo Hinsher… and all the knights swore an oath of honour. That’s how the geas came to be. The knights swore they would not become another demon knight and that all would unite to stop any knight who brought dishonour on the knighthood. A vulnerability the knights created on their own, and a means of keeping them in check, geas, … was regarded as simply an oath with no magic or sorcery to enforce it.” (#61)
  • “There’s something to the geas. Truth be told, there’s no price to pay even if the oath is broken. “If anything, I guess there may be something to be gained by keeping it that way. I think the supernatural power of the knight may also have something to do with it.” (#61)
  • Nagyunn: “How can you be sure that your ability developed from geas?” / Zius: “You’ll know when you acquire the ability… the same goes for how to harness it. You’ll feel it become a part of you. Just as you know that you’ll fall if your centre of gravity is shifted… you know that if you violate your geas… your ability will disappear.” (#62)
  • “I suppose the criterion would be one’s own self. Though it may seem harsh, it is said the geas given to the individual is the one most suitable to them.” (#64)
  • Magicians and Dragon’s Descendants have been researching this magic long before Knights (#65)
  • “There’s a statistic that says a special ability like this is largely manifested in below average weak knights.” (#65)
  • “Let’s say there’s a restriction that you can’t use one hand. Then your opposite hand will become stronger or something else will replace the role of the restricted hand. There’s a phenomenon in which this is maximised, and it’s assumed that the ability from geas is the same type.” (#65)
  • Dragon’s Descendants and Magicians are said to have been researching this much long before Knights (#65)

Narins

  • “Unlike the masterpieces created by craftspersons, narins are weapons from the heavens that have existed since the beginning of time. They are said to contain supernatural powers, as opposed to weapons crafted by human hands.” (#28)
  • “Unlike ordinary weapons that can be wielded by anyone, narins wait for their rightful owners. Unless the narin chooses you, you can’t use its abilities.” (#31)
  • Aucherguni, Naryun’s narin, is two narins combined, made by feeding them to a dragon (#94

Independent Knights (Also called Free Knights)

  • “There are two types of knights. There is the special type, the Qualified Knight, which requires one to undergo exams. Second is the Independent Knight, which is bestowed on public figures with influence so they do not revolt against the empire.” (#36)
  • “On average, qualified knights will be stronger. But stronger independent knights exist as well. There’s just a larger standard deviation compared to the more stable qualified knights. Not every strong person in the world wants to become a knight.” (#36)
  • Independent Knights do not pledge geas (#36)
  • White Crow Legia was the independent knight who created the full-scale rift between Combat Knights and Independent Knights. (#53)
  • “Qilin didn’t want this situation to be brought to light. Because the disgrace of the knights… involve the Dragon’s Descendants.” (#74)

Dragon’s Descendants

  • A little further north than Woodion (#71)
  • Their mask has a communication or call function (#73)
  • “Don’t worry. This is our way. Dying in the name of upholding our contract is in itself an honour. In this barren land, the only thing we can rely on is the mercenary business. Honouring the contract means we are protecting our families and descendants. To the Dragon’s Descendants, our contract is like your code of honour.” (#78)
  • “Dragon’s descendants is the name of a clan. It doesn’t mean they’re actually dragons.” (#80)
  • Lyamin: “Chief Run. Please permit use of full power.” / Laurun: “Alright… Dragon Claw Lyamin. I, Dragon’s Descendant Laurun, permit you… to release full power.” (#83)
  • “They are merely humans who worship dragons. They likely do not even know that dragons exist. I am not like those fakes.” (#89)
  • They have something the knights don’t. Someone once said, “The strength of those mercenaries is of a different type than that of the knights. Knights are individually strong, but their powers are only additive or can even be weakened if they combine efforts. The powers of the mercenaries are squared when they become them. If they unite… they can easily beat even the knights.” (#89)
  • Backstory of Laurun (#104)
  • Mother of the Dragons has a prophetic ability, and also used to be (?) Laurun’s lover (?) lol (#106)
  • After taking the ritual you become a Dragon Warrior (#106)
  • “This is what the knights are like. They’re arrogant, self-centred and only believe themselves to be righteous. We have no choice but to kill them anyway. There’s no reason to speak to them.” (#115)
  • They need Darang (and maybe Luce?) to complete their mission (#115)

Generals

  • There are five spears that protect the King of the Eastern Continent (#37)
  • Eastern Continent uses Qi (#76)
  • “Based on the tidbits of info I picked up at the time, the scholars’ level of involvement in politics on the eastern continent is overwhelming. Likely, the relationship between scholars and warriors isn’t strong since they’ve come to the border area.” (#77)

Dragons

  • Qilin: “To begin with, dragons are creatures of imagination that don’t exist. It’s a divine beast that appears only in the legends of the clan passed down since long ago.”  (#80)
  • “Just as after every winter comes spring… just as water flows south… just as there is birth as there is death… universal truths exist. Universal truths which command the world. However, there are a few things not commanded by these truths. A good case in point is what you called the narin. And also… [me].” (#81)
  • “A dragon is neither a plant, a beast, nor a human. Dragons are conceptual beings rather than living creatures. The more the dragon understands this concept, the maturer the dragon. As a result, it’s easy to tie dragons down to individual truths. Thus, the weight of a dragon’s words are heavier than a human’s. In other words, a dragon’s promise has a binding force close to that of a universal truth.” (#81)
  • “Long ago, many dragons resided in the East. They left because the humans of the East began to sponge off the dragons. The humans tricked the dragons and exploited them, and the dragons became sick of it and left. The one who enthusiastically went along with the humans was the Dokkaebi.” (#119)
  • “The significance of a name is different for dragons. Dragons are like concepts. Names are not simply an appellation but the very designation and meaning of a dragon’s existence. It goes beyond the dimension of language. If one who knows the dragon’s name speaks it in front of one who does not, the latter cannot perceive it. Know a dragon’s name, and you will know much more than just the name. It is something that cannot and should not be easily divulged.” (#119)
  • Whenever a dragon’s name is called, others can pick up on it with greater clarity (#124)

Magic

  • “Magic is a series of exact calculations via equations or spells. Next, the invocation… you plead the magical powers. Magic is how much the magical powers help you via your equation. Essentially, how much the magical powers favour the magician. That’s what decides the effectiveness of one’s magic.” (#35)
  • Equation x Talent = Quality of Magic (#35)
  • The magician’s gathering (#56)
  • Magic Weapon demonstration (#97)

Malto

  • “She was affiliated with some magician group. That’s where she pulled a lot of stuff.” (#113)
  • “Are you talking about the cult organisation we rounded up a few years ago?” / “Yes, they were called the Malto. Apparently, they held family members hostage to recruit people.” (#113)

Misc.

  • “Among those skilled enough, the overpowering aura of a single murderous glance can decide the outcome of a duel. On the other hand, to those below a certain skill level, that aura is nothing but a slight chill.” (#6)
  • Village fire was 10 years ago
  • the story of the Spear and the Shield. “Even with the sharpest spear and the strongest shield, these weapons are pointless without the ability to persuade others.” (#20)
  • “This plant is called Zami. If eaten raw, it will induce diarrhoea and stomach pains, but it’s fine if eaten cooked. It’s nutritious and can be easily found.” (#33)
  • Dragon martial arts. A style of martial arts create to combat dragons. It’s notorious for its level of difficulty, so there are only two who have ever learned it. (#42)
  • Nijel — the capital of the central continent, where the royal palace the emperor resides in is (#48)
  • “Do you not find it strange? You all call this place the Eastern Continent, yet the ones here refer to you as the Left Continent. The meaning of “left” in Left Continent… merely refers to the direction one faces.” (#88)
  • The crystal sea (#95)
  • “For some reason, some entities with independent concepts deviate from existing laws. You all call that a narin, a dragon, or even a knight.” (#99)

Personal Guess-work Recap

General Summary:

  • Nagyunn and Lauzun call Najin Jin-ah, everyone else calls him Najin
  • Najin calls Nagyunn Gyeon-ah
  • Nagyunn (and presumably Najin, whom Nagyunn is imitating) calls Lauzun Jun (), Luzian calls him Jjun (), everyone else calls him Lauzun
  • Lauzun usually doesn’t refer or get referred by name by others often lol
  • Tyr doesn’t refer to others by name a lot either
  • Otherwise, Apprentice Knights are simply called by their names (no honorific)
  • Fadiyan and Ludika call each other Fadi and Ludi respectively
  • Zius calls the Knights by their real names if he’s scolding them or trying to grab their attention. No honourifics so far except with Kandentia, whom he called Kandentia-nim
  • Zius refers to Kandentia and Daljan as [animal]-nim
  • Darang simply calls Ludika by her name, but refers to other Knights with -ssi
  • Hasen, Solvas and Tanshirin refer to the Second Special Class Knights with -nim
  • Other Knights generally refer to each other by their animal (no honorific), though for animals with one syllable such as Hen () they are more often called by their colour + animal name
  • Nagyunn usually refers to the knights as [animal]-nim, with the exception of Waron who he calls Waron-nim
  • Luzian refers to Ludika and Darang as [animal]-nim and the other knights as [real name]-nim
  • Tamin refers to the Knights as [animal]-nim
  • Nagyunn calls the Dragon Dragon-nim (용님)

In terms of formality, (most to least)

  1. [colour + animal]
  2. [animal] OR [colour + animal] if animal name is 1 syllable
  3. [real name]
  4. [nickname]

Re: Honourifics: -nim (implies difference in hierarchy) is more formal than -ssi (colleagues but polite), which is more formal than using no honorific; the least formal is -ah (implies closeness).

Just a fun fact:

  • Kandentia, Daljan and Zius are all familiar with each other, but Kandentia doesn’t seem to know Fidorance well, since she took a moment to recall who Wild Dog is
